Shelton Superintendent Takes Up Ice Bucket Challenge

Shelton Schools Superintendent Freeman Burr accepted Derby Superintendent Matthew Conway’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” Thursday — then issued another challenge of his own to the Derby schools chief.

Conway and other Derby school officials on Monday challenged counterparts in Shelton, Ansonia, and Seymour to the challenge, designed to raise money and awareness for ALS, a nerve disease that affects the brain and spinal cord.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has taken social media by storm, and the ALS Association announced Wednesday that it had received more than $94 million in donations in the past month.

Ansonia officials accepted Derby’s challenge Tuesday. Seymour officials say they’ll douse themselves Friday afternoon.

We accept your ice bucket challenge from Derby to Shelton,” Burr says in the video, seated in a chair in his Bloomfield backyard and dressed down in shorts, a polo shirt and baseball cap. Hopefully we’re going to raise $500 to give to ALS.”

But before dousing himself, Burr threw down the gauntlet to Conway to take up another challenge related to the two cities’ Turkey Day football rivalry.

And finally, big fella, I’m issuing you another challenge — Thanksgiving Day, Shelton-Derby: loser makes another contribution to ALS,” Burr said.

Love it, my friend,” Conway replied in an email. Game on. Great stuff and keeps the awareness going.”
