In a prepared statement, Derby Police Lt. Sal Frosceno said someone called 911 about 11:45 a.m. reporting gunshots in the area.

Police notified schools and day cares in the area, and posted officers outside the nearby Irving School and St. Mary-St. Michael School.

The schools conducted lock-ins as a precaution, Frosceno said.

Crews from two tree removal companies working nearby with heavy equipment initially took responsibility for the loud noise.

A search of the area did not reveal any witnesses, suspects or evidence of a discharge of a firearm,” Frosceno said.

But he said a short time later a more thorough canvas of the area by detectives revealed evidence supporting the report of a discharge of a firearm.”

Frosceno’s statement did not go into detail about what the evidence was, but he said cops collected it.

In an email he said police are not aware of any victims.

An investigation is ongoing.

Police asked anyone who knows what happened to reach out.

Anyone with information is asked to call Derby Police Detectives at 203 – 735-7811,” Frosceno said. All calls may remain confidential.”
