The Law Enforcement Torch Runs raise money and awareness for Connecticut Special Olympics each year.

Friday’s run marked the event’s 30th year. More than 1,500 people take part in the run statewide, logging more than 530 miles.

Lasky’s mother, Trudy, said before Friday’s event that Special Olympics has helped her son, who has cerebral palsy, in innumerable ways.

It’s awesome,” Lasky said. This is a kid who’s had a tough time with mobility. He had major leg surgery a year before he started competing(at age 8). It’s been good for him because he’s gotten stronger, he’s more self-confident, and he’s learned about teamwork. It’s just a really good program.”

The torch was due to light the ceremonial cauldron for opening ceremonies about 7:15 p.m. at Southern Connecticut State University, with events featuring more than 2,400 athletes going on throughout the weekend.
