Striking Workers Can Have A Toilet

A portable toilet is OK with the Derby Board of Aldermen.

Union officials representing striking nursing home workers at the Birmingham Health Center on Chatfield Street asked for permission last month to place a portable toilet near the spot where the union workers gather.

There was a glitch — the toilet was placed outside prior to the Aldermen granting permission, Alderman Dave Lenart pointed out.

Mayor Anthony Staffieri urged the Aldermen to approve the toilet after-the-fact, as a way to keep the peace.”

The Aldermen unanimously approved the request.

Lenart asked how many workers have been arrested at the site.

As of April 22, Derby police had charged two striking workers with disorderly conduct, police said.

Workers in Derby and at Hilltop Health in Ansonia have been on strike since April 15.

Union officials and Spectrum Health — the company that owns the two nursing homes — have scheduled negotiations for May 17 in Ansonia and May 26 in Derby.
