Two People Sent To Hospital After Lester Street Crash In Ansonia

Photo: Ethan FryTwo people were sent to Yale-New Haven Hospital after a bicycle they were riding collided with a truck on Lester Street in Ansonia.

A 16-year-old boy from West Haven, whose name was not released because of his age, and Nicole Portunato, 32, of Waterbury were taken to the hospital with what police said were minor injuries.

Portunato was listed in fair condition Friday morning at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

However, a woman who identified herself as Portunato’s mother on the Valley Indy comment section said her daughter suffered serious injuries.

My daughter was one of the victims she was in critical (condition) so this is not true,” Anita Nunez Portunato wrote in a comment Friday night. Thank God she is doing better, she got out of the ICU a little while ago and was moved to another (floor). Please get your facts straight, thank you.”

The teen’s condition wasn’t available.

The first crews sent to the scene had been advised of a pedestrian struck. The call then came over the emergency scanner as a bicyclist down.

At the scene dozens of concerned neighbors watched as police walked among mangled bike parts taking measurements and photos once the two people injured had been put into ambulances.

Ansonia Police Lt. Andrew Cota said in a prepared statement Thursday afternoon that two bicyclists were riding down Grove Street toward Lester Street, one of whom had a passenger on the rear of the bike.

As the bikes approached the intersection the (bike) with the two riders could not stop and drove into the intersection of Lester Street and struck the side of a WB Mason truck,” Cota’s statment said. This truck was traveling south on Lester Street and had the right of way.”

The truck’s driver, who was not injured, stopped immediately, Cota said. At the scene detectives took photos of the rear of the truck, where the bike had struck it.

The male and female on the bicycle sustained minor injuries and were transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital to be treated,” Cota’s statement said.

Emergency transmissions indicated one of the patients was not conscious when the first EMS crew arrived. At least one patient was taken to Yale-New Haven in a trauma alert” from the scene.

Cota said the case still under investigation and no enforcement action had been taken Tuesday afternoon.
