The Valley Arts Council has been busy preparing for the upcoming holiday season with several area events the group is sponsoring or helping to support.
Along with its annual Christmas & winter themed exhibit, which is scheduled to open Thanksgiving weekend, the VAC will host “SPIRIT” A HOLIDAY CELEBRATION OF ART” with a reception on Saturday, December 19th from 4pm to 10pm at Derby’s Gallery@37 (37 Elizabeth Street). The event will feature the work of photographer and VAC member Nichell Delvaille, as well as, artwork by the VAC membership.
“The holidays are a high point of the year for the gallery”, said VAC President Rich DiCarlo, “not only do we exhibit the paintings, sculptures and photographs that our artists are known for, but we also feature handmade ornaments, cards, jewelry, mini-canvases, prints and other small gift items.”
The December 19th event will also have music and refreshments on hand.
The Derby Cultural Commission will host its ANNUAL TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY on Friday, November 27th beginning at 6:30pm and The Derby Historical Society will conduct its CHURCHES BY LANTERN PROGRAM at 5:30pm sharp. Using its signature punched-tin lanterns, participants will start at Immanuel St. James Episcopal Church, which will open at 5:00 PM. The tour will start there, and will also visit Derby United Methodist Church and the Church of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, before ending at the Second Congregational Church, coinciding with the tree lighting on the Derby Green. A history of the churches will be given at each stop, and Christmas carols will be played on each church’s unique organ.
Tickets are $10 each, $8 for children 5 to 15. Although tickets will be sold at Immanuel St. James before the event, it is recommended that reservations be made in advance, due to the popularity of the event.
All proceedes benefit the Derby Historical Society, and its preservation and educational programs. Call the David Humphreys House at 735-1908 for more information. A similar event will take place on North and South Cliff Streets in Ansonia the evening of December 11.
In addition, the VAC is happy to help support an OPEN STUDIO EVENT sponsored by AIR BORNE CREATIONS of Beacon Falls on Saturday November 21st from 1pm to 4pm at the Beacon Falls Business Park (141 South Main St., Beacon Falls).
The day will include original paintings, gift items, ornaments, custom pet and auto portraits & much more! For more information call 203.729.4774 or visit www.airbornecreations.com
Also, the VAC is proud to support the ST. MARY – ST. MICHAEL SCHOOL 2ND ANNUAL HOLIDAY FAIR on Saturday November 21st from 10am to 5:30pm at St. Mary – St. Michael School (14 Seymour Ave. Derby).
There will be a variety of craft vendors, food, baked goods & pictures with Santa Claus. There will also be a raffle and kid’s craft table.

I am commenting on the Derby Green Christmas Lights. As a child my family lived on 4th and Minerva St.Every Christmas was a wonderful time for us sled riding down what was then called BUCKS HILL which is the top of Minerva St. down past Volaros Fresh air Market down to Main St.Our faces pretty much frostbitten and mittens full of frozen collected balls..our excitement broken only by the distant sound of parents yelling at us to come come. The Christmas Tree glorified as the Lighting Ceremony took place with the chanting of cherished Christmas Carols and happy people awaiting that Special Day.It is a memory forever in my heart and soul and I thank God for letting me share a part.SO..continue on with the Tradition dear old Derby and Merry Christmas!!!
