Update: Volunteers Needed To Help Ansonia Fire Victims

Volunteers are needed this weekend and next weekend to move furniture and other items that will eventually be given to five families displaced by a fire in Ansonia March 10.

The volunteers are being asked to meet at 11 a.m. this Saturday and Sunday (and again next Saturday and Sunday) in the parking lot at 415 Howe Ave. in downtown Shelton, near the spot where the weekly farmer’s market is held. A map is embedded toward the bottom of the post.

NOTE: On Friday morning Lundeen told the Valley Indy the plans had changed. The new plans are to meet Saturday (March 25) and then again on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2. Same meeting location, same 11 a.m. gathering time.

The March 10 late night fire damaged two houses on the corner of Fourth and Liberty streets in Ansonia. The cause and origin remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.

After the fire Going the Extra Mile,” a grassroots group organized by Missy Lundeen, a Red Cross volunteer from Ansonia, began organizing a relief effort to help the families who lost everything in the fire.

(FYI — Team, Inc., a long-established community action agency in Derby, is collecting money toward the relief effort, as previously reported by the Valley Indy. Click here to donate.)

Lundeen was contacted by three separate home owners who said they wanted to help.

The owners have each offered to donate the contents of their homes to the families.

The home owners are able to make the grand gesture because one owner is moving, another owns but no longer lives in his two-family home, and the third home was lived in by a person who passed away.

The owners are happy to see the belongings put to good use, Lundeen said.

The houses to be emptied are in East Haven, Oxford, and Stratford.

That’s where the volunteers come in.

We need as many people as possible who have trucks, who have muscles, who just have the ability to help pack up these three homes and bring the contents back to our storage locker in Shelton,” Lundeen said. Click the play button on the video at the top of this story to learn more.

The items will be stored in space being donated by Conti Self Storage at 415 Howe Ave. in downtown Shelton.

Lundeen said volunteers will be meeting and splitting into teams when they meet 11 a.m. Saturday (March 25) in the parking lot of Conti’s storage. The plan is to move the items from the East Haven house on Saturday.

The volunteers will meet 11 a.m. Sunday (March 26) at the same parking lot to move the stuff from the Oxford house.

NOTE: On Friday morning Lundeen told the Valley Indy the plans had changed. The new plans are to meet Saturday (March 25) and then again on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2. Same meeting location, same 11 a.m. gathering time.

Then, on Saturday, April 1, the volunteers will meet again at the Howe Avenue parking lot at 11 a.m., and then travel to the Stratford house to move those items back to Shelton.

Lundeen said the home owners donating the items have opted to remain anonymous.
