Waterbury Man Faces Drug, Weapons Charges Related To July Chase

Shelton police filed charges against a Waterbury man in connection to a July incident during which they say he led police on a chase away from a pharmacy after trying to obtain drugs fraudulently.

The man, 38-year-old David Balek, was later found in Ansonia with a sawed-off shotgun hidden under the hood of his car, police said in a prepared statement.

Cops served Balek with a warrant Jan. 13 at Superior Court in Derby charging him with criminal possession of a firearm, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, fraudulently obtaining a controlled substance, second-degree forgery, and engaging police in pursuit.

Balek has been behind bars since last October, when he was picked up on warrants for failing to appear for court appearances in Meriden and Waterbury.

The Shelton incident occurred July 13 at Walgreens Pharmacy at 700 Bridgeport Ave., police said in a prepared statement from Detective Christopher Nugent.

An employee of the store reported to police that a customer tried to get a phony prescription filled.

Officers responded and found Balek in the parking lot, but he drove away when cops tried to stop him. A pursuit ensued. Balek eluded officers.

A short time later police in Ansonia found Balek’s car blocking a driveway and notified Shelton police.

A follow up investigation led to the discovery of a sawed off shotgun underneath the hood of the vehicle and the fraudulent license used to attempt to obtain the prescription at Walgreens,” Nugent’s statement said. DNA evidence linked Balek to the incident and Shelton police obtained an arrest warrant for him pursuant to the investigation.”

Balek’s next scheduled court date in Derby is Feb. 8.
