ANSONIA – The fire marshal’s office is investigating a fire that destroyed two cars in the Target parking lot late Saturday night (March 22).

Firefighters were called to the lot at about 10:26 p.m. and found two cars engulfed, according to Ansonia Fire Chief Alex Horjatschun.

Horjatschun said the night was especially windy. The wind blew the flames sideways, he said.

“My concern was having other cars engulfed in flames, because the wind was very significant that evening,” Horjatschun said.

He said the two cars in the blaze were a Ford Fiesta and a Toyota Prius.

Ansonia Fire Department Assistant Chief Anthony DeLucia said the fuel tank in one of the cars failed, further fueling the flames.

“The fuel tank let go, so that was kind of what the big problem was. It was a regular car fire,” DeLucia said.

He said putting the fire out was straightforward.

“Once we get a water source and had plenty of water and used some foam, then it went right out,” DeLucia said.

The fire marshal’s office couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.

Horjatschun said he was thankful the fire happened as late as it did, since most of the parking lot had emptied out. He said the fire could have been worse if it had happened during peak shopping hours.
