DERBY — A 41-year-old woman is charged with animal cruelty after allegedly abandoning her dog on Prindle Avenue.
Precius Goodwin was charged Aug. 11 after a warrant was issued for her arrest.
According to a prepared statement posted to social media, Shelton Animal Control called Derby police on July 29 to report that the dog, later determined to be named Rocky, had been tied to a crate and left on the side of the road without food or water.
An investigation alleges the dog belonged to Goodwin, who said she could no longer care for the animal, according to the written statement from police.
Rocky had been temporarily taken in by Patricia Stochmal immediately after being found. Shelton Animal Control, who serves as Derby’s animal control agency, took the dog for treatment at Ansonia Westfield & Seymour Veterinary Hospital.
Rocky was diagnosed with mange and dental issues. Police said the vets attributed the dog’s medical problems to neglect and a poor diet.
Goodwin is out on a $20,000 bond pending a court arraignment in Derby scheduled for Aug. 21.
