Carol D. McGuire, age 89 entered into eternal rest on Friday Dec. 26, 2025. She was born in Derby, CT on January 11, 1936, daughter of the late Charles Francis Dunning and Grace (McCormick) Dunning. Carol was predeceased by her childhood sweetheart and loving husband of 50 years, William H. “Flip” McGuire. Carol was a lifelong Valley resident and devout communicant of The Church of the Assumption, Ansonia, CT. She graduated from The Assumption School in 1949, St. Mary’s High School in New Haven in 1953 and Southern CT State Teachers College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
She later returned to Southern to complete her Master’s degree in Reading. Carol had the pleasure of teaching in each public elementary school in Ansonia 30 years. She often shared funny stories and triumphs of her students at the family dinner table. Carol cherished her coworkers who became life long friends. Carol was an active member of her church and community.
She taught catechism at Assumption School, was a member of the Historical Society, the Democratic Town Committee and the Charter Hose Ladies Auxiliary. When she wasn’t busy with family and friends, Carol could be found at her home in Dennisport Cape Cod, MA. There she enjoyed time with family and friends and plenty of shopping. She is survived by her four daughters and sons-in-law Mary Ellen and Michael Czapor of Waterbury, Margaret and Gregory Kelly of Stratford, Melissa and Keith Ellery of Swanton, VT and Mary Lee and Dan McClellan of Woodbury.
She was predeceased by her only son, William F. McGuire, her brother Thomas F. Dunning, and brothers in law Frederick McGuire and Milton H. Hupprich. She is survived by her sisters in law Lillian McGuire and Irene Hupprich. She was a loving and devoted grandmother to her 15 grandchildren: Patrick, Shaun and Kevin (Jackie) McGuire, Stephen, Matthew and Elizabeth Czapor, Ryan (Marissa) Kelly, Kathleen (Brandan) Sheehan, Michael and Maura Kelly, William (Arielle) Ellery, Lauren (Cole) Irish, Jonathan Ellery, Anthony and Daniel Della Volpe. As well as 5 great grandchildren William and Joshua McGuire, Luella and Samantha Ellery and Leah Irish.
The family would like to thank the wonderful people at Coachman Square of Woodbridge who lovingly cared for our mother as if she were their own. We were truly blessed. Calling hours will be held Tuesday Dec. 30 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am at Bennett Funeral Home 91 N. Cliff St Ansonia, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Assumption at Noon and burial at Mount St. Peters Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Assumption School in care of the funeral home.
