DERBY — The Derby Board of Education has received dual recognitions from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE), underscoring its commitment to exemplary educational leadership and effective communication with the community. CABE honored the board with both the CABE Board Leadership Award and the Bonnie B. Carney Award for Excellence in Educational Communications at the CABE/CAPSS Annual Convention on November 17, 2025.

The CABE Board Leadership Award acknowledges boards that exemplify teamwork, strategic planning, and an unwavering commitment to student achievement and community engagement. The Derby Board of Education demonstrated exceptional leadership by meeting rigorous criteria across 34 items spanning Leadership, Student Achievement, Policy, and Community Relations.

Superintendent Dr. Matthew J. Conway, Jr. expressed pride in the board’s dedication, noting that its recent accomplishments include an inclusive strategic planning process, a steadfast focus on school safety, and a commitment to supporting educators through a tailored coaching model.

Former Board Chairman and current BOE Member, Jim Gildea, remarked, “This distinction reaffirms our commitment to fostering an environment where students and staff are supported in every way possible. The Derby Board of Education is composed of volunteers who selflessly dedicate their time and expertise, making this recognition truly meaningful.”

In addition to the leadership award, the Derby Board of Education also received an Honorable Mention under the Bonnie B. Carney Award for Excellence in Educational Communications. This award celebrates the district’s commitment to transparent and effective communication with parents, students, and the community at large. The Derby Board of Education Community Newsletter, published and distributed quarterly, was developed by the School/Community Relations and Policy Committee and reflects the board’s dedication to fostering a strong, informed community through transparent updates on goals, achievements, and plans.
