DERBY — The 2026 American Legion Oratorical Competition was held on January 15, 2026, and featured Derby High School students Jeyden Allwood ’29, McKeon (Mac) Gray ’27, and Sofia Rudus ’26. Each student delivered a compelling speech focused on the U.S. Constitution and the responsibilities of American citizenship.
The competition results were as follows:
- 1st Place: McKeon Gray ’27
- 2nd Place: Sofia Rudus ’26
- 3rd Place: Jeyden Allwood ’29
All three students were awarded scholarships by the American Legion in recognition of their strong performances. Mac Gray will advance to the 2nd District Oratorical Competition on February 7, 2026, to be held at the Naugatuck American Legion Post 17. His first-place oration highlighted the importance of civic responsibility and personal engagement with democracy, drawing connections between the U.S. Constitution and four personal pillars he encourages all citizens to develop to remain actively connected and engaged.
Derby High School is proud of our students for their dedication, scholarship, and leadership in promoting civic engagement! Many thanks to the John H. Collins Post American Legion Post 24 for their support, including Adjutant Paul Varsanik, Commander Gus Williams, and Chairman of Americanism Maureen McDonnell. Best of luck to Mac Gray as he represents Derby High School at the district contest and continues to showcase his passion and strong public speaking!
