ANSONIA/HAMDEN – State Sen. Jorge Cabrera (D-Hamden) announced Feb. 3 that he has brokered an agreement between the towns of Hamden and Ansonia that will have Hamden provide Ansonia with four truckloads of road salt – 32 tons, or about 64,000 pounds worth.

Ansonia is nearly out of road salt for the season, and has ordered more, but doesn’t know when it will arrive. At some point, Ansonia will return an equal amount of road salt back to Hamden. Ansonia, which covers 6.2 square miles, has 69 miles of roads. Using the standard formula of about 300 pounds of salt per two-lane road mile, 64,000 pounds of salt could treat three more average snowstorms in Ansonia.

“I started talking with (Ansonia) Mayor (Frank) Tyszka right after that big weekend snowstorm at the end of January. He said he didn’t have enough salt to treat another storm, although he had some on order. So, I talked with Mayor Sendroff, and we arranged for what I would describe as a mutual-aid type situation,” Sen. Cabrera said.

In The Valley Indy coverage area, Cabrera represents Ansonia, Derby and Seymour. He also represents people who live in Beacon Falls, Bethany, Hamden (where he lives) and Woodbridge – the 17th State Senate District.
