DERBY — Derby High School’s varsity football team has a new coach, officials announced.

Stone Belzo was formally appointed during a recent meeting of the Derby Board of Education.

“I’m beyond excited for the opportunity to lead the Derby football program,” Belzo said in a prepared statement sent by the school district March 3. “Derby High School has a rich history and a proud football tradition. I’m committed to building this program on toughness, discipline, and relentless effort. My goal is to help our student-athletes grow not only on the field, but in life.”

Belzo is 26 years old, according to Hearst CT.

He played football at Middletown High School, where he was twice named an All-State player. He was named All-Conference three times.

He played football at Springfield College, where he landed his first coaching job. He was previously a defensive end coach at New Britain High School and Middletown High School.

“Coach Belzo is widely respected for his leadership, discipline, and commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field,” district officials said in a prepared statement.

The press release from the school district included words of support from athletic director Jenn Moffat, school board chairman Ken Marcucio, and Derby Public Schools Superintendent Matthew Conway.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Stone Belzo to the Derby family. Derby football has a rich tradition, and we are thrilled for Coach Belzo to lead the next chapter,” Conway said. “His commitment to student-athlete growth, strong relationships, and program pride make him an excellent fit for our community. We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our players, school culture, and the entire Derby community.”
