SEYMOUR – Police said a suspect is in custody in New York following an armed robbery that happened Wednesday (March 25) near South Main and Pearl streets.

Seymour Police Chief John Bucherati said Seymour police detectives obtained an arrest warrant to extradite the suspect to Connecticut.

Police are withholding the suspect’s name until he is charged in Seymour.

Bucherati said police were notified around 8 a.m. Wednesday (March 25) about an elderly man walking along South Main Street. The man, who Bucherati said was an 80-year-old resident of Waterbury, was picked up and interviewed by police.

The man told police he gave a ride to an unknown male from the Waterbury train station, who requested a ride to New York. The driver stopped at the Henny Penny gas station off Route 8 before proceeding to the area of South Main Street and Pearl.

The passenger allegedly pulled a firearm, ordered the elderly man out of the vehicle, and took off in the man’s vehicle.

The victim was not injured, Bucherati said.

Patrol units alerted police departments all over the region about what happened.

The stolen car and the suspect were eventually located on the FDR Drive in Manhattan.

The suspect was taken into custody by members of the NYPD.
