ANSONIA – Members of the school board could get a first look at the 2026-2027 budget at a meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tonight (Monday, Dec. 15) at the district’s administrative offices on 42 Grove St.

According to a notice on the school district website, the meeting agenda includes two budget-related items: a discussion of next year’s budget, and possible action on next year’s budget.

The meeting is open to the public.

The discussion will kick off the first budget season under the watch of Mayor Frank Tyszka, a Democrat who was elected Nov. 4.

In Ansonia, the school board votes to adopt a budget, and then sends it to the city for review. The proposed school budget is reviewed by the mayor, the Ansonia Board of Apportionment and Taxation (nicknamed the tax board), and the Ansonia Board of Aldermen.

The Aldermen get the last word on the school district’s allocation from the city.

Under the city’s charter, Tyszka is required to propose a combined city and school budget to the tax board by the second Monday in February.

The Board of Aldermen are required to adopt a budget for the city and schools by April 30. A series of public hearings are to be scheduled before the final vote.

The current fiscal year runs until June 30, 2026. The budget the school board is scheduled to talk about starts July 1, 2026.

There is one new member of the school board – Steven Adamowski, a former Alderman and a retired school superintendent. Adamowski replaces Tracey DeLibero, a Republican who did not seek re-election to the school board.

During the board’s Dec. 10 meeting, members elected Chris Phipps as president and David Knapp as vice president. Phipps takes over from Rich Bshara, who remains on the board as a member, while Knapp takes over from Phipps’ former role.
