DERBY — A burning smell in a classroom delayed the start of the day at Derby High School Monday morning (Dec. 15).

Firefighters were sent to the school after a report of a fire alarm at about 9:10 a.m.

Classes usually start at 7:30 a.m., but the district was on a 2-hour delay because of icy conditions on the roads.

Staff and students were just arriving at school at the time of the fire alarm. Students were kept on the buses briefly as firefighters arrived.

The issue was with an overheated motor that was part of the heating system, according to emergency radio transmissions.

Firefighters checked the building while arriving students were sent to the Derby Middle School gym across from the high school on Nutmeg Avenue.

Firefighters could be seen leaving the high school/middle school campus at about 9:40 a.m.

The air temperature was about 23 degrees on Monday morning.

Principal Jennifer Olson sent an email to the community saying repairs are underway.
