Michael Edward Pacowta, age 72, of Milford, entered into the arms of Jesus on August 15, 2026, at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Mickey was born in Derby on October 26, 1953, son of the late Michael and Helen (Baclawski) Pacowta.
As a teenager, Mickey served as a volunteer at Echo Hose Firehouse where he made lifelong friendships, most especially with John Laton. Mickey graduated from Shelton High School Class of 1971, and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Quinnipiac Class of 1975.
Mickey became a CPA before he found his true calling in public service. He served as Mayor of Shelton from 1985 to 1991, President of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce from 1991 to 1994, and President of the Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce from 1994 to 1999. He also worked as comptroller for Diamond REO/Peterbilt in West Haven and Berlin and as a financial planner in Monroe and North Haven.
Mickey had a lifelong interest in politics and remained active in the Valley and CT, serving on many boards and committees. Mickey finished his career as CEO of Valley United Way, retiring in 2025.
Those who knew him best know he had a great speaking and singing voice, loved oldies and even sang with The Drifters one Shelton Day. On many trips to the casino, he loved playing blackjack and then sharing the perks he earned with his family and friends.
Beyond the public figure that he was, he remained for his family a devoted son, a caring and supportive brother, and the epitome of a lively, funny, and fun uncle.
He is the beloved brother of Janice Pacowta Sylvester and her husband Ralph, uncle to Ralphie Sylvester (Emma) and Merry Sylvester, great-uncle to Mesa and Finney, and uncle and godfather to Taylor Brookes. He is also survived by his cherished family friends, Sue and Bill Nystrom and Maria and John Laton.
The Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
We loved him and know he loved us and his dear friends. We will forever miss you, Mickey. We are comforted to know you are at home and at peace with your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Due to family health circumstances, there will be no formal services at this time. Our family asks that those wishing to honor Mickey share their stories and condolences here.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable donation in Mickey’s honor to the Shelton Senior Center, 81 Wheeler Street, Shelton, CT 06484, to commemorate his service to Shelton and the Valley. Mickey was particularly proud of the building of the Senior Center during his mayoral tenure and remained involved in fundraising through the years.
