Derby Will Start Paying For Sewer Work This Year

In 2014, Derby voters approved spending $31.2 million to repair and upgrade the city’s sewer system. The work includes replacing pipes, and replacing three old pump stations.

On today’s “Navel Gazing” podcast, Jack Walsh gives an update on the massive undertaking — which Derby residents/sewer users will start paying for later this year.

Derby Mayor Rich Dziekan makes his first appearance on The Valley Indy’s weekly talk show since being elected in November.

He is joined by his chief of staff, Andrew Baklik.

Dziekan and Baklik answer questions from a few Valley Indy readers and react to some recent comments posted on ValleyIndy.org by readers.

The mayor talks about a plan afoot to be a “guest bartender” as a way to raise money for Team Inc., and The Valley Indy asks Baklik and Dziekan about new people and salaries within Derby City Hall.

Seymour School Staffers Laid Off Last Month Won’t Be Coming Back

Seymour school district officials said they had to lay off 13 workers last month because of a shortfall in state funding.

The move eliminated all “clerical paraprofessionals” from the district.

Those workers answered phones, answered the entrance doors and assisted with lunch duties, according to an email from Seymour Public Schools Superintendent Michael Wilson.
