HARTFORD — Gov. Ned Lamont said he would veto a controversial bill Monday (June 23) that had caused concern in Derby and other municipalities.

House Bill 5002 was approved by the members of the Connecticut General Assembly in May. Its formal name was an act concerning housing and the needs of homeless persons.“

According to an article from The Connecticut Mirror, the bill attempted to address a critical housing shortage by requiring municipalities to set goals for affordable housing, prioritizing state aid to communities that build housing, and streamlining approval for so-called middle housing,” defined as a building with two to nine units,” the Mirror reported.

SHELTON VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT INCIDENT RESPONSES

On 6/16/25 at 1:54 pm the Pine Rock Co. #4 responded to an electrical hazard outside on Algonkin Road.

On 6/16/25 at 6:36 pm the Echo Hose Co. #1 and the Huntington Co. #3 responded to a report of a motor vehicle fire on route 8 south bound between exits 11 and 9. There was no fire but firefighters found the vehicle had overheated.

Cooling Center Locations Throughout The Valley

VALLEYConnecticut’s first heat wave of the summer is here, and it’s important as ever to keep cool.

The Valley Indy reached out to city officials in Ansonia, Derby, Seymour, and Shelton, and received the following list of cooling centers. These spaces are open to the public and have air conditioning. 

With temperatures expected to exceed 100°F across much of the Valley, stop by these spots to cool off a bit.

Route 8 Construction Update For The Weeks Of June 23 – 30, 2025

NOTE: No work will be done over the July 4 Holiday weekend, Thursday, 7/3, at 3pm through Monday, 7/7, at 6am.

Work will continue during the daytime, 7AM to 3PM, Monday through Friday

  • Both northbound and southbound traffic lanes have moved to the right shoulder to create a work area for median barrier replacement between Exit 20 and 22 (New Exits 17 – 18), and to create a second work area for median barrier replacement after Exit 22 (New Exit 18).
  • Median barrier and median drainage are being replaced.
  • Pipe repair and lining activities will continue throughout, northbound, and southbound from Exit 15 to 22 (New Exits 12B-18).

SHELTON – The Huntington Green will once again come alive with the sounds of Jewish music, the smells of sizzling kosher food, and the energy of families and friends gathering to celebrate. The 4th Annual Shelton Jewish Festival is set to take place on Sunday, June 22, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM, bringing with it an experience that’s as soulful as it is joyful.

What started as a modest gathering a few years ago has quickly become a local favorite, and according to Rabbi Shneur Brook, director of Chabad of Shelton and the festival’s organizer, this year’s celebration promises to be the most exciting yet.

This week, we take a look back at 1957, the year Elvis had us All Shook Up” and the Tuskegee Boycott – a significant civil rights protest in Alabama aimed at challenging racial segregation and discrimination – began. Pat Boone’s Love Letters in the Sand” topped the music charts. 

U.S. President Harry S. Truman visited Disneyland in 1957 and refused to come aboard the popular Dumbo attraction. Truman, a Democrat, didn’t want to be seen riding in the symbol of the Republican.

The Center for Cancer Care At Griffin Hospital 17th Annual 5K Set For Sept. 20

DERBY – The Annual 5K Walk/Run to benefit the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., Derby, will celebrate its 17th year on Sat., Sept. 20.

This non-competitive, family-friendly event begins with day-of registration at 7:30 a.m., and starts at 9 a.m. D’Addario Automotive Group in Shelton is this year’s Presenting Sponsor.

Registration is $35 and includes a t‑shirt. The registration fees will increase by $5 after Sept. 8. Pre-registration is encouraged at griffinhealth.org/5k.

On 6/9/25 at 8:31 am the Huntington Co. #3, Echo Hose Co. # 1 and the White Hills Co. #5 responded to an automatic fire alarm activated at #4 Research Drive. There was no fire.

On 6/9/25 at 10:50 am the Echo Hose Co. #1 and the Huntington Co. #3 responded to a motor vehicle accident on route 8 south bound between exits 9 and 7.

On 6/9/25 at 1:49 pm the Echo Hose Co. #1 and the White Hills Co. #5 responded to an automatic fire alarm activated at #375 Coram Avenue. There was no fire.

This Week In Valley History: 1925!

This was the year Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. launched its first Goodyear Blimp,” beginning one of the most well-known advertising and public relations campaigns in history. Charlie Chaplin was the most famous person in America and U.S. life expectancy was 57.6 years for men and 60.6 years for women. Calvin Coolidge was sworn in for a full term as President of the United States. It was the first inauguration to be broadcast on radio.
