Youth Baseball Group To Renovate Bradley School Field In Derby

DERBY — A private youth baseball organization will renovate the diamond at the Bradley School on David Humphreys Road.

The organization, The Boys of Summer, has been using fields in Derby for three years.

While using many of the Derby facilities we found that Bradley field could use some attention,” Paul Gordon, the organization’s president, said in a letter to the city.

The Boys of Summer contacted Diamond Landscapes and Athletic Fields of Fairfield, who recommended between $10,000 and $12,000 in repairs.

The Boys of Summer offered to pay for the improvements, which include:

  • New clay
  • New field conditioner
  • Reset bases
  • Edging
  • Storage

The Derby Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Wednesday to accept the donation.

Derby resident John Netto, whose son plays in the league, spoke to the Aldermen on behalf of the organization.

The city retains ownership of the field, and the Boys of Summer are not at the top of the pecking order when it comes to using the field (school organizations still take priority).

We hope we may continue to strengthen the partnership and cooperation between the Boys of Summer and the City of Derby,” Gordon’s letter stated.

I am elated that the Boys of Summer have decided to show their appreciation for the continued use of the facility up at Bradley School,” Mayor Rich Dziekan said. Their donation will benefit all the youth and adult teams that utilize those fields and for that I am grateful. On behalf of the city of Derby, I’d like to thank the Boys of Summer for their generous contribution.”

Netto said the work will start immediately and should be completed by the end of the month.

The city is responsible for maintaining the field.
