The layoffs come as a total of 24 teaching positions have been eliminated as a result of the Board of Education receiving a budget of roughly $31.2 million from the Board of Aldermen last week.
“We need to educate kids, and I don’t know how we’re going to do this at this point,” Mathew Hough, president of the Ansonia Federation of Teachers, told reporter Ethan Fry in the latest “Navel Gazing” podcast.

The school board had requested $32.6 million.
Hough talked about how the layoffs will affect Ansonia schools going forward — larger class sizes and, most likely, an exodus of teachers for better-paying school districts.
He also talked about how last week’s budget vote in the context of a funding conflict between city hall and the school district that has resulted in a lawsuit, as well as other topics, including an upcoming meeting of a committee studying the possibility of regionalizing Ansonia and Derby schools.
