The main suspect in a sexual assault on the Derby Greenway is in custody, police announced Monday.

The suspect has not been charged with a crime in Derby. Police have interviewed the suspect and are working with the prosecutor’s office to bring charges.

We’re expecting a warrant as soon as possible,” said Derby Police Lt. Justin Stanko.

The man is suspected of raping a 75-year-old woman at 1:30 p.m. Saturday on the Greenway, a popular walking trail along the Housatonic and Naugatuck rivers.

The violent crime happened on the walking trail near the Route 8 overpass.

The suspect is also thought to have stolen items from two businesses on Pershing Drive in Ansonia just before attacking the woman.

Derby police circulated an image from surveillance video from one of the Ansonia businesses. Waterbury police recognized the suspect, learned there was a warrant for his arrest for unrelated charges out of Westport, and picked the man up.

Arrest warrants are being submitted to charge him in our larcenies,” Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said.

Derby police are still asking people who may have seen something Saturday to call police at 203 619 1906.

… these types of investigations are multifaceted, complex and oftentimes rely on scientific DNA evidence,” police said in a statement posted to the Derby Police Department Facebook page.
