Letter: Vote For Horsley Tuesday

In my opinion, Valerie Horsley is the Democratic candidate who is most well-positioned to represent the citizens of Derby as a member of our state’s Senate.

Ms. Horsley, motivated by the result of the most recent presidential election, has been extremely active in the political realm. She co-founded Action Together Connecticut, an advocacy group dedicated to promoting and defending progressive values,” and has since decided to become even more involved, running as a Democrat for the 17th District’s State Senate seat.

Right now, of the 36 Senators in Hartford, only nine are women, and the percentage of our overall female representation in the legislature ranks 21st in the country. We must do a better job of constructing a legislative body that reflects our actual population in Connecticut. Dr. Horsley, a mother of two school-age daughters, understands the challenges of being a working mother and raising a family in the current climate of wage-stagnation, pay gaps, and educational inequity around the state.

Additionally, Dr. Horsley, though experienced in political action and knowledgeable in the positions that she supports, is not an establishment politician, as her background is in science. Her PhD in Biology and the lab that she runs at Yale University have trained her to evaluate concepts and establish solutions to problems based on data and reason, not party politics or entrenched, but unfounded, opinions.

Advocating for improved health care for all, expanded family leave options, educational equity, and a strong shift toward increasing 21st century jobs in Connecticut, Valerie Horsley provides the most powerful Democratic candidate in the Senate Primary on Tuesday, August 14.
