Tempers Flare, Budget Adopted At Oxford BOE

Following a heated argument between two of its members, the Oxford Board of Education Tuesday approved a budget request for 2012 – 2013 that would increase spending 3.31 percent over the current budget.

The board approved a $26,798,247 request by a vote of 6 – 1, with the only opposition vote coming from Ted Oczkowski.

Before the final vote, Oczkowski and Paula Guillet, the chair of the school board, got into an argument after Oczkowski raised what he called a concern about transparency,” saying he hadn’t received budget documents in a timely manner.

Oxford Superintendent Proposes 5.34 Percent Budget Increase

Saying he realized it represented a very significant” increase, interim Superintendent John Reed proposed a 2012 – 2013 school budget Tuesday night 5.34 percent greater than this year’s spending plan.

He said the $27,323,006 proposal, which he presented Tuesday to the Board of Education, wouldn’t add all that much, and that if it were subsequently lowered to an increase 1 to 2 percent, class sizes could be affected adversely.

Oxford Schools Deficit Shrinks

An Oxford Board of Education budget deficit that was reported in April to be $256,000, is now down to $126,000 and getting smaller, according to Rosemary Hanson, business manager for the schools.

The latest figures were announced at the Board of Finance meeting Monday, where Board of Education chairman Rose McKinnon updated board members on the projected deficit. 

They’ll come back to us in August, after all their bills are in and everything is done. We’re hoping for the best,” said Finance Board chairman Lila Ferrillo.

Oxford Budgets Approved, But Recount Scheduled For Board Of Education

Oxford voters approved 2011 – 2012 town and school budgets Tuesday at a day-long referendum. 

But the town must hold a recount on the $25.9 million school budget because it passed by only 13 votes. The final count was 846 in favor of the school budget, and 833 opposed.

The $13.4 million town budget is final, after it passed with 920 yes’ votes, and 761 no’ votes.

Oxford Schools Look For 3.8 Percent Budget Increase

PHOTO: Tony SpinelliThe Board of Education is asking for a 3.7 percent increase over current spending, with a $26.36 million budget proposal approved Wednesday. 

The increase — a total of $943,671 over the current year’s $25.41 million budget — is driven by the usual factors of wage increases and rising insurance costs, Board of Education members said.
