Top Five Valley Stories Of The Year: The Readers Decide

The Valley Indy posted a Google Form survey asking people to choose the top Valley story of 2024.

Fifteen choices were posted. Readers had to choose one top story.

Stats show that 214 votes were cast. Of those, a whopping 57 percent chose the terrible Aug. 18 Flood of 2024 as the top story of the year. Click here for our flood coverage.

Here are my top five stories from the last year – which was also my first at The Valley Indy.

It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone. As we say goodbye to 2024, it’s time to announce my personal top five picks for The Valley Indy stories of the year.

From the devastating flash flooding in August that claimed two Valley lives to a triumphant tale of a Valley swimmer who nabbed his second Olympic Bronze medal, there was no shortage of news that happened in the Valley over the last 365 days.

Griffin’s Wonderland Of Trees Raises More Than $10,000 For Spooner House

DERBY – Griffin Hospital’s 2024 Annual Holiday Wonderland of Trees fundraiser collected a record $10,156 for Spooner House in Shelton to help feed and shelter area families in need this winter.

As part of Griffin’s Planetree Person-Centered Care Philosophy, the Holiday Wonderland of Trees calls on hospital departments to decorate three-foot artificial evergreen trees that are raffled off every December. The fundraiser aims to help improve health and well-being of the Griffin community by supporting the Spooner House’s services.

This is the 14th year of the fundraiser, which has raised more than $104,000 in total.

Derby Hammer Assault Suspect Transferred To Milford

DERBYA Derby man accused of sneaking into his neighbor’s house and attacking a teenager with a hammer had his case transferred Dec. 19 to Superior Court in Milford, where more serious crimes are heard.

Andrew Fogarty is accused of home invasion and second-degree assault in connection to an incident in the early hours of Dec. 6. Both charges are felonies.

His case has twice appeared on the docket in Superior Court in Derby, the city where the crime took place.

Derby BOE Adopts School Uniform Policy

DERBY — The city’s board of education voted unanimously on Thursday (Dec. 19) to require school uniforms for students starting at the beginning of the next school year.

Derby schools have a dress code policy, but officials thought staff was spending too much time adjudicating potential dress code violations.

Jim Gildea, the chairman of the Derby Board of Education, said uniforms will cut out the distraction.

This initiative has always aimed to give our administrators more time to concentrate on educating our students rather than managing dress code issues,” Gildea wrote in a text message to The Valley Indy.
