Seymour Board Of Education Honors Student And Staff Achievements

SEYMOURThe Seymour Board of Education on Dec. 9 celebrated the achievements of students and staff members during its final meeting of the year.

Here are the highlights:

The following students were nominated by one of their teachers and recognized as Seymour Champions for academic, social and community awareness.

*Bungay School

First grader Mackenzie Bullard was feted for starting up the Seymour Food 2 Kids program which provides snacks and food to struggling families in the community.

Third grader Kiley Sawicki was recognized for going out of her way to ensure others are included and for her awareness of how her fellow students are feeling.

New Principal Named At Seymour High School

Paul Lucke

SEYMOURThe board of education voted unanimously on Dec. 16 to name veteran educator Paul Lucke the new principal at Seymour High School. 

I feel a deep sense of gratitude and desire to give back,” Lucke told The Valley Indy in an email.

Lucke, 49, will become principal on Feb. 3. His annual salary is $180,000. He has been the high school’s assistant principal since 2007. 

Lucke is replacing James Freund, who is scheduled to retire at the end of January.

Route 8 Construction Update For Weeks Of Dec. 16, 23 & 30, 2024

For the week of Dec. 16, nighttime work will continue from 6PM to 6AM:

  • Nighttime operations will typically occur Sunday night through Thursday night.
  • Saw-cutting and concrete pavement repair activities will continue, northbound from Exit 15 to 22 (New Exits 12B to 18).
  • Both northbound and southbound traffic lanes have moved to the right shoulder to create a work area for median barrier replacement between Exit 20 and 22 (New Exits 17 – 18).
  • Median barrier and median drainage are being replaced.
  • There is no upcoming daytime work.

Seymour Remembers Former High School Principal Anthony LoPresti

SEYMOUR – Whether you knew him as Mr. LoPresti, Tony, or the best principal ever,’ Anthony LoPresti is being remembered as one of Seymour’s most beloved educators.

LoPresti passed away on Monday (Dec. 9) at age 89. He is best known for serving as Seymour High School’s principal for 23 years before retiring in 1993.

The Valley Indy reached out to Seymour residents past and present to get an idea of what LoPresti meant to the town.

Aging Seymour Firetrucks To Be Replaced

A Seymour Fire Department ladder truck during a 2022 fire. The town on Nov. 7 moved forward with acquiring new pumper trucks.

SEYMOUR – The Seymour Board of Selectpersons voted Nov. 6 to waive the bidding process and move forward with a lease-purchase of two new fire trucks, not to exceed $2.8 million.

The new trucks will replace two, 26-year-old fire trucks that are nearing the end of their useful life span, Seymour Fire Department Chief Chris Edwards said.

Edwards told the board in October that frontline trucks should be replaced and taken off the road after 20 years in accordance with national standards.
