Grace M. (Mattei) Giugno, age 91, our beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford on October 14, 2017, after a brave journey with Alzheimer’s.  She was an intelligent, funny, strong, loving and generous mother, grandmother and friend. Throughout her illness, she never lost her smile or her “grace.” We take comfort in the fact that she is now at peace with other family members and beloved pets.

Grace was born on August 14, 1926, daughter of the late Andrew and Elisa (Petrillo) Mattei. After growing up in Ansonia, she married the love of her life, John M. Giugno and relocated with him to Seymour, their home of over 60 years. Grace had a long career with Uniroyal Corporation. After retiring from Uniroyal, she also worked for Catholic Family Services and volunteered with her husband at Griffin Hospital in Derby. Grace was a longtime communicant of St. Augustine Church in Seymour.

Grace loved her family and numerous pets and enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, dining out, casino trips and traveling, but was happiest at family gatherings and preparing gourmet meals for her family. Grace is survived by her sons John (wife Dora) of Northford and Michael (wife Kathy) of Naugatuck, daughter Lisa (companion Alan Morris), cherished grandchildren, Nathan, Jessica, Brittany and Michael Giugno, and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased in death by her brother, Francis A. Mattei. The Giugno family would like to thank and acknowledge the nurses, aides and staff of Masonicare and Pond Ridge in Wallingford for the outstanding care and love that they shared with Grace during her stay.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday October 17, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Wednesday, her funeral will begin at 9:00 am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Augustine’s Church in Seymour. Interment will follow in Mt. St. Peter’s Cemetery in Derby.

To honor her memory, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Masonicare Memory Keeper’s Team. To send an online condolence, please visit
