Shelton High School held its Twenty-Ninth Annual Book and Achievement Awards Program on Wednesday, May 18, in the school’s gymnasium.
Dr. Beth Smith, Headmaster, opened the program speaking to the mission statement of the school requiring students to meet high academic and behavioral expectations.
She recognized and congratulated the staff, students, parents, and the community for working collaboratively to ensure that students meet these expectations.
Dr. Smith also thanked donors from individuals and organizations in the school and community, as well as local businesses, colleges, universities and the armed forces, for their generosity which enables this program to continue.
The Shelton High School Concert Choir performed the Star Spangled Banner and Student Council President Margaret Siu led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Greetings were given by Guidance Department Chairperson Cynthia Brouillette, Student Council President Margaret Siu, Mayor Lauretti, Board of Education Chairperson Arlene Liscinsky and Superintendent of Schools Freeman Burr. Housemasters Steven Swensen, Dave Presutto and John Skerritt announced the award recipients.
Awards $100 and under totaling $10,682.60, as well as the university and college book awards and certificates of recognition, were presented to 156 students.
All of the award recipients have taken advantage of the many opportunities offered to them at Shelton High School and in their community.
They have displayed qualities of scholarship and have demonstrated the important traits of leadership, citizenship, and community service.
The award recipients were nominated for these awards by their teachers, school counselors, administrators, coaches and club advisers.
Mr. Skerritt commended the award recipients for demonstrating exemplary qualities of good citizenship, academic excellence, leadership, perseverance, dedication and outstanding performance in the arts, music, athletics, service and extra-curricular activities.
The evening Awards Program will be held on June 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the SHS auditorium.
