22 Stolen Cars Prompts Warning From Ansonia Police

Ansonia police are warning residents to lock their cars, after 22 cars have been stolen in the city over the past several weeks.

The police department issued the following statement Tuesday:

Over the past several weeks the Ansonia Police have responded to a relatively high number of reports of stolen motor vehicles.

More specifically, we have taken 22 stolen motor vehicle reports. Of these, almost half have been Honda Civics.

It appears as if there is a person or persons walking the area of Wakelee Avenue and the side streets, off Wakelee Avenue, stealing cars.

Previously there was a rash of stolen cars from the area of Xtra Mart on Wakelee Avenue but each of these vehicles were left running and or with the windows open. The suspect in these thefts was a young thin build black male. More recently the Honda Civic has been the vehicle of choice. It is unclear at this moment what the thief is using to get the vehicle running, but a majority of the vehicles have been left unlocked when the theft occurred.

We are advising residents in the affected area, as well as the entire city, to make sure that when you exit your vehicle that the doors are locked, the windows rolled up, and the keys are removed. In addition, do not leave any valuables in open view that would entice the thief to enter the vehicle.

If anyone may have witnessed anything suspicious and or if people are seen walking around parked vehicles for a period of time they are asked to call the Ansonia Police Department at 203 – 735-1885.”

The streets on the Westside of town that vehicles were stolen form in the last two weeks were:

  • N. Westwood Road
  • Wakelee Avenue
  • Clarkson Street
  • Howard Avenue
  • Jackson Street.
