50 Derby Students To Travel To Queens To Drop Off Supplies

Note: The following letter was sent to the Valley Indy Tuesday afternoon by Derby High School Principal Greg Gaillard.

Hello Derby School Community,

I am writing to you requesting help.

As you know millions of families have been affected by Hurricane Sandy, including my parents and sister in Rockaway – Queens, New York.

Some families lost all of their possessions inside their homes, while others completely lost their home from flooding and fires.

Every single home in Rockaway was impacted by this mega storm and they need help.

For those that do have homes, and have passed inspection, they have a dwelling to reside in to keep them out of the elements.

These homes do not have power, their homes were filled with 6 – 7 feet of water, and they need help getting back on their feet.

They need man power, cleaning products, black garbage bags, paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper, water, food (nonperishables), D and AA batteries, shovels, heavy duty brooms, blankets, and their spirits lifted!

I am extremely proud to announce Derby High School will be sending a bus load (50) of senior and junior students to Rockaway, my hometown, Friday, November 9th to assist any and all families with the cleanup and to deliver the much needed supplies.

So many students wanted to help in some way and when the idea of going down there to physically help families came up, students ran with it!

The bus is leaving DHS at 7 a.m. sharp and returning at 4:30 p.m. to DHS.

If anyone can find a way to contribute to the cause, Derby High School will be accepting donations from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 8th in the cafeteria.

Thank you!
