$53,000 For Mold Clean-Up At Perry Hill School

The Board of Aldermen Monday approved spending on two school projects — both unanticipated expenses, and one the city hopes to get reimbursed.

In a very brief special meeting, the board unanimously approved spending $290,000 to replace corridor and stairwell doors at Shelton High School.

The project is part of the post-fire construction at the school, and the city will submit the cost to the insurance company for reimbursement, according to Mayor Mark Lauretti.

It’s a topic that has been around for the better part of 2009,” Lauretti told the board during discussion on the spending. We’re at the point now where we just have to keep moving forward.”

The school suffered damage in December 2008, when a cigarette thrown in a trash can ignited into a full fire.

The board also approved spending $53,000 to clean up unexpected mold issues at the Perry Hill School construction site on Perry Hill Road.

In November, Baron Consulting Co. environmental engineers conducted six air tests at the site and determined that mold levels were too high in the basement and crawlspace areas.

Monday the Board of Aldermen approved paying the $53,000 to AIG Inc. of West Haven to perform shock-wave treatments to the areas to clean the mold problems.

According to the resolution, the money will come from $41.5 million already approved for the construction project at the school.
