Aging Seymour Firetrucks To Be Replaced

SEYMOUR – The Seymour Board of Selectpersons voted Nov. 6 to waive the bidding process and move forward with a lease-purchase of two new fire trucks, not to exceed $2.8 million.

The new trucks will replace two, 26-year-old fire trucks that are nearing the end of their useful life span, Seymour Fire Department Chief Chris Edwards said.

Edwards told the board in October that frontline trucks should be replaced and taken off the road after 20 years in accordance with national standards.

The board’s action will allow Edwards to place the order for the trucks, but it will be another three years before the town actually receives the trucks. That will give the town three years to determine the best financing options for the purchase, officials said.

A bid waiver was approved because officials said there is essentially one company able to provide the vehicles to the town’s specifications.
