Ain’t Light Grand?

CONTRIBUTEDGrand Light, a venerable business that was based in New Haven for more than eight decades, has found a new home in Seymour.

The company’s new Seymour location, at 104 Day St., features an expanded lighting gallery, design center and additional manufacturing capacity for its Historical Restoration and custom lighting operations, according to a press release.

The company’s lighting showcase displays an inventory of over 5,000 lighting fixtures representing every style, size and category available,” and a full line of residential and commercial lighting products, from crystal chandeliers to flood lights,” according to its website.

The business had been based on New Haven’s Grand Avenue for 84 years, but moved to Seymour, company owner Steve Stockman told the New Haven Indepdendent in August, to emphasize its historic light restoration business.

Stockman said the company’s customers range from universities such as Yale, churches and cathedrals, the National Park Service, and the renovated Teddy Roosevelt birthplace at Sagamore Hill on Long Island. Another recent project is restoration of two 200-pound bronze fixtures in front of New Haven’s state courthouse.

Most of the projects are for lighting fixtures that date between 1905 and 1935, Stockman said, which makes the new Seymour location a nice fit.

It was extremely important to us that we find a period building between 1905 and 1935 to fit our clientele’s [needs, and projects]. The new facility has the power, air compressors, spray booths, everything we need equipment-wise,” he said.

The 1‑acre Day Street location is about 12,000 square feet. Grand Light bought the property last November.

The company will have an open house at the new location Oct. 25 and Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with food, refreshments, door prizes, tours, and demonstrations.

Seymour Economic Development Director Fred Messore said his office has been working with the company for more than a year to make the move a reality.

Our strategic location, building inventory, workforce and Enterprise Zone helped in the decision to locate here and we are happy to welcome Grand Light joining several other world class companies,” Messore said in an email.
