A Bridgeport man accused of trying to throw a dog off the Hawkins Street bridge in Derby could learn his fate at a court hearing scheduled for June 26.
Alexander Rosario, 32, pleaded guilty March 26 under the Alford doctrine to maliciously wounding an animal before Judge Karen Sequino at Superior Court in Derby.
Under Alford, a defendant does not admit all the facts in the case but concedes there is enough evidence for conviction at trial.
Under the plea bargain, Rosario seems likely to get probation. His case was up for disposition Wednesday (June 5) in Superior Court in Derby.
However, two key players in the case — the prosecutor John Kerwin and Judge Karen Sequino — were not available Wednesday, so Rosario’s case was pushed until June 26.
Rosario was arrested last July after Derby police said he attempted to throw a Jack Russell terrier off the Hawkins Street bridge.
At the time of his arrest, police weren’t sure what had allegedly motivated Rosario, but noted they had responded to a domestic dispute involving Rosario within 24 hours of the incident.
Several people had called 911 to report a man was beating a dog, which prompted the initial police response.
Upon arrival, police said the dog, which has since been adopted, was hanging off a chain-link fence over the road by its collar.
