Ansonia-Derby Softball To Raise Money For Cancer Center

Softball players from Ansonia and Derby high schools will square off in a game Saturday morning to raise money for the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital.

The annual “Breast Cancer Benefit Softball Game” has raised thousands of dollars for the Derby cancer center in the past four years.

Go to Ryan Field in Derby (corner of Hawthorne Avenue and Chatfield Street) at 10:30 a.m. for 50 – 50 raffles, pony rides, a DJ, food and lots of fun!

This year’s game starts at 11 a.m.

The 2012 game raised about $2,000 for the cause.

In an interview last year with the Valley Indy, Derby Softball Coach Joe DiMartino said the benefit game started in 2011 when his players and assistant coaches decided to do something after DiMartino’s wife, Lori, was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 42.

“They wanted to do something as a group to raise money for breast cancer because of what my wife was going through,” DiMartino said.

The number of participants — and money raised — grows each year.

According to the New Haven Register:

“The teams will honor three breast cancer survivors by having them throw out the ceremonial first pitches: Lori DiMartino, wife of Derby Coach Joe DiMartino, Lori McCarthy, friend of Derby assistant coach Jenn Moffat and Jodi Chevarella, wife of Derby girls basketball coach Dave Chevarella.”
