How much is the Stop and Shop property in Ansonia worth?
The city put its value at $13.7 million in a 2007 assessment, but has dropped the figure down to $12.7 million after Stop and Shop disputed the number.
The court settlement, approved by the Board of Aldermen this week, means a $25,000 difference in Stop and Shop’s taxes, said corporate counsel Kevin M. Blake.
“It’s a $1 million reduction in assessment, which is a $25,000 reduction in taxes,” Blake said Tuesday. “We could have gone to court and lost $2 million. Or we could have won.”
The next revaluation in Ansonia is in 2014, Blake said. There is one more assessment dispute, with Target, pending, Blake said.
Tax Bills Due
And by the way: tax bills are due. They might have arrived a little late, Mayor James Della Volpe said at the meeting. There was a mess-up with the mailings for four towns in Connecticut Della Volpe said.
“We can’t put an extension on when they are due,” Della Volpe said. “If you get the bill on the 14th, it’s still due on the 15th.”
Della Volpe said the bills should be the same as last year, so residents should be able to go to the tax office at city hall and pay the bill even if they haven’t received one in the mail yet.
