Update: Budgets Rejected For Third Time In Ansonia

ANSONIA — The city and school budgets were rejected at a referendum today (Friday, May 23).

Here are the results:

The budgets would have increased the mill rate by 2.55 mills, or 9.6 percent.

Both budgets now go back to the Board of Aldermen for further review.

A public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 2. As of May 23, it is scheduled to be held via Zoom. The times, dates, and locations of meetings could change. Check the city website for the most current information.

Turnout for the third referendum was about 7.2 percent, based on the number of 11,369 registered voters in November 2024. 

That’s lower than either of the other two referendums. The first referendum had the highest turnout, at about 9.7 percent.

The rejected city budget would have been a $145,487, or 0.5 percent increase over the current budget. The rejected school budget would have been a $1.58 million, or 4.2 percent increase over the current budget.

Between the first and third referendums, the Ansonia Board of Aldermen had trimmed a total of $400,200 from the original proposed city budget, and $403,305 from the original proposed school budget.
