Ansonia Dems Look To Fill Slate

Ansonia Democrats will pick two new people to run for Board of Aldermen Monday night.

The Democratic Town Committee will meet at 7 p.m. at its headquarters building on Main Street to pick replacements for candidates to run in the first and the fourth ward.

The openings came as a result of two candidate withdrawals since the party nominated its slate for the 2009 election.

Keith Maynard, who was supposed to run for re-election as fourth-ward alderman, withdrew his name after he was arrested in August for allegedly assaulting his then-fiance.

Maynard also resigned from the Board of Aldermen. He is due in Derby Superior Court on Oct. 15.

First-ward alderman Peter Danielczuk also withdrew his name from the candidate list because he moved out of the district. Danielczuk said he now lives in the second ward, and wouldn’t seek a spot on the ballot to represent that ward.

Democratic Town Committee Chairman Pauline Sampieri said the committee has two people in mind for the spots, but declined to name them before the official vote. Only members of the first and fourth wards will be able to vote for replacement candidates, Sampieri said.

Republicans

There have also been some changes to the Republican slate since the Republican Town Committee met in July.

Two people have gathered enough signatures to be put on the ballot as petitioning candidates.

Lisa Blake was placed on the ballot to run for seventh-ward alderman. George Boath Jr. petitioned to be put on the Board of Education ticket. He currently sits on that board.

The Republicans had endorsed Nancy Monaco to run for the Board of Education because Boath was not at the caucus, said Judy Larkin Nicolari, the Republican mayoral candidate.

Once Boath filed his paperwork to be put on the ballot, Monaco withdrew her name.

It doesn’t make sense to have two Republicans running for the same position,” Monaco said. He’s on the board right now. It just made more sense to have the same Republican hold the seat.”
