ANSONIA-DERBY — The Ansonia/Derby Girls Basketball program kicked off their seasons this past weekend.
All girls from both towns in 4th, 5th & 6th grade were split up into four teams to produce the first ever AD Girls Basketball League and the girls in 7th and 8th grade each have a team competing in the Milford Knights Basketball League.
AD Girls Basketball League played their first ever games at Ansonia Middle School on Saturday, December 4th. Both games were exciting, and the girls put on a good show for the fans in attendance.
In the opener, the Red Devils were victorious over the Jaguars. Katelyn Mancini was the leading scorer of the game and the entire day with her ten points for the Red Devils. Layla Hanaif chipped in with four points and eight rebounds. The Jaguars had three players get in the scoring column, Ty’Anya Ward, Veronica Dutan and Chloe Zietek.
The second game saw the Huskies win over Big Blue. Huskies were led by Peyton Johnson with six points and four steals. Laila Burden chipped in with four points and six rebounds. Big Blue was led in scoring by Saniyaa Moore.
This Saturday, December 11th, Big Blue will take on the Red Devils at 10am followed by the Jaguars playing the Huskies at 11:15am at Ansonia Middle School.
Our two travel teams played two games each this weekend to kick off their seasons. The eighth-grade team split their games, losing to Fairfield PAL 28 – 22 and beating East Haven 29 – 10. Seventh grade team lost both of their games to St. Theresa and the Milford Knights.
The eighth-grade team received contributions from multiple players in both games. Zoe Dombroski led the team with eight points including two three pointers in the loss. Weston Ahearn chipped in with seven points and Jen Palmer had six points. On Sunday, the eighth graders bounced back from the close loss and were led by thirteen points from Palmer and six points from Alanah Hairston.
The seventh graders played Saturday & Sunday as well, falling short both days but the hustle and effort given in both games is a great sign for the upcoming schedule.
On Saturday, Shea Gray poured in seventeen points, which was a weekend high for points by an individual in the program. Molly Lynch had two points and six rebounds. In the second game of the weekend, Gray led the team again in scoring with eight points. Lynch had two points and five rebounds. Kara Foster chipped in with two points. Both travel teams will play two games each this upcoming weekend as well.
