Ansonia-Derby Girls Youth Basketball Report

ANSONIA — DERBY — During the weekend of Jan. 15, the AD Girls Basketball League returned to the court after an extended holiday break.

The Jaguars secured their first win of the season in the opener and Big Blue extended its win streak to three in the second game.

In the first game of the day, Chloe Zietek led the Jaguars in scoring and made the game winning basket to lock up the victory over the Huskies. Alexa Lynch and Millie Lisi rounded out the scoring for the Jags in their first win. Peyton Johnson led the Huskies with six points and five steals.

The second game of the doubleheader was a competitive game throughout with the Huskies pulling away in the second half to defeat the Red Devils. Triston Ahearn was the hot hand for Big Blue compiling fourteen points in the win. Layla Hanaif had six points and twelve rebounds in the losing effort.

Our two travel teams continue to show improvement while taking on other towns in league play.

The eighth-grade team lost a back-and-forth game on Sunday. Jen Palmer and Weston Ahearn were the team’s leading scorers with seven apiece. Kate Maher controlled the glass with a team high six rebounds. They have two more weeks of games before the playoffs begin in February.

The seventh graders played a doubleheader on Sunday and were able to secure their first win of the season. Shea Gray led all scorers with nineteen points in the victory, Molly Lynch added eleven and Bridget Diglio-Guerrette chipped in with two. The players and coaches had to quickly move on from the win to play their second game. Although the second game resulted in a loss, the seventh graders had balanced scoring with Gray, Lynch and Diglio-Guerrette getting the scoring column again but also getting six points from Leah Kish and two points apiece from Janellis Delvalle and Aaliyah Ballester.

This program would not be possible without the volunteer work of our league and travel team coaches. Special thanks to Ashley Blackwell, Sal Hanaif, Jeannette Sheehy, Jennifer Teodosio, Julie Lynch, Rob Lisi, Brighton Ahearn, Dan & Anne Lynch, Stephen Kish, Chris Ahearn and Karl Dombroski Jr. for all you do for these girls and the program.
