ANSONIA — The city’s fire marshal and police detectives are investigating a fire that displaced two residents.

No injuries were reported and the Red Cross is helping the people who were displaced.

The fire at 34 Russell St. near Griffin Hospital was called in at about 6:30 a.m. Friday.

The cause and origin had not been determined as of 11:15 a.m.

However, police Lt. Patrick Lynch said Ansonia detectives are involved because the fire may have been suspicious.

An emergency radio transmission indicated a mattress outside a garage may have been set ablaze somehow.

We’re interviewing people right now to figure out what happened,” Lynch said. The fire marshal and the detective bureau are trying to determine the cause and origin at this time.”

Callers reported that a garage and vehicles were burning.

Upon arrival, companies encountered heavy fire from the garage involving a vehicle and extending to the house,” according to a post on Facebook from Eagle Hose Hook & Ladder Co. No. 6.

(The) bulk of fire was knocked quickly and crews opened up the structure to check for extension,” according to the post.

Derby firefighters responded to the scene and Seymour provided coverage for the City of Ansonia in case other calls for service came in.
