The Ansonia Economic Development Commission wants to start a farmers market in downtown Ansonia.
The commission discussed the proposal at its meeting Thursday, and will address the Planning and Zoning Commission on Monday, June 25.
“This isn’t a new idea,” said Economic Development Commission chairman Vinnie Scarlata. “This isn’t my brainchild at all. Not by a long shot. It’s been on the table for a while … We’ve got a good commission and it’s time to put some of these ideas into action.”
Scarlata said the commission is looking at two sites downtown: The parking lot next to Ansonia Rescue Medical Services, and the parking lot on East Main Street.
Scarlata favors the parking lot next to ARMS, and envisions painting murals on the flood walls in the parking lot.
The goal is to get three Ansonia farms involved, and hand over control of the farmers market to them once it’s up and running, Scarlata said.
The Ansonia farms Scarlata wants to include are Marcucio Gardens, Hilltop Nursery and East Side Nursery.
The project is in the early planning stages, Scarlata said.
“We’re fact finding. We’re doing our homework now,” Scarlata said.
Those interested in sharing their ideas or volunteering to help start the market can attend the Planning and Zoning meeting at 7 p.m. Monday June 25 at Ansonia City Hall.
Other Valley towns already have farmers market. Shelton’s farmers market runs on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Canal Street.
Seymour’s farmers market is held on Tuesdays from noon to 6 p.m. at the Community Center parking lot on Pine Street. Click here for the website for the Seymour Farmers Market.
