Ansonia Hopes To Save Big Bucks With Street Sign Replacements

A once-faded street sign now looking good in Ansonia.

ANSONIA — Officials in City Hall are replacing sun-faded street signs, hopefully at a cheaper price than in years past.

Greg Martin, Mayor David Cassetti’s director of constituent services, told the Board of Aldermen last month that there are between 50 to 100 street signs in the city that need to be replaced.

The mayor’s office posted to Facebook, asking residents to contact Martin by email (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) if they live on a road with a sign that is faded.

Replacing the metal signs cost about $60 a pop, Martin told the city’s legislative body.

But Martin said the city, with the help of Public Works Superintendent Michael D’Alessio, are pursuing an alternative that might only run about $20, Martin said.

The alternative is basically a laminate, that you paste over like a bumper sticker,” Martin said. The material is reflective and seems to be durable, he said. The city has been testing the laminate stickers on Winter Street, Fourth Street, Beaver Street and Jewett Street.

The city previously used the stickers to paste over faded public parking signs. That was about three years ago and the laminate has held up well, Martin said. Ordering new public parking signs can run as high as $1,500 per sign, Martin said.
