Second Ansonia Budget Vote Friday, May 9, 2025

ANSONIAHere is the latest on the proposed Ansonia budget, which is scheduled to go to referendum 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 9 at the Ansonia Armory, 5 State St.

  • The proposed mill rate is 29.5 mills, according to the budget posted on the city website and confirmed by corporation counsel John Marini. The 29.5 mill rate is slightly more than the 29.3 mill rate discussed at an Aldermen meeting May 5. Budget director Kurt Miller said the 29.3 mill rate was wrong due to a mathematical error. The correct mill rate was published May 6.

  • People are voting on the city and school budgets separately.

  • The city side of the budget totals $29,879,532. That is a 1.27 percent spending increase compared to the current budget. 

  • The school side of the budget totals $39,560,719. That is a 5.28 percent spending increase compared to the current budget.

  • The two budgets combined total $69,440,251.

  • A budget-related robocall sent by the city May 7 had errors. The 29.5 mill rate is an increase of 3.01 mills, or 11.4 percent, over the current mill rate.

  • An explanatory text’ provided at the polling place was revised Thursday (May 8).

Potential Property Tax Bills

If voters approve the budget as-is, a single-family home on Holbrook Street assessed at $180,000 would pay $541.80 more next year in taxes.

A house on Gardners Lane assessed at $248,000 would pay $746.48 more next year.

A house on High Acres Road assessed at $366,000 would pay $1,101.66 more next year.

Referendum Questions

At the referendum, voters will be asked the following two questions:

  1. Shall the city portion of the budget, as recommended by the board of aldermen of $29,879,532 for the fiscal year 2026 be adopted?

  2. Shall the board of education portion of the budget, as recommended by the board of aldermen, $39,560,719 for the City of Ansonia for the fiscal year 2026 be adopted?

Voters will also be able to vote too high” or too low” on each of the proposed budgets.

This is the second budget referendum in Ansonia. Voters rejected the two budgets on April 25.

The Aldermen then voted to trim $173,000 from the city side of the budget and to send the school budget back to voters unchanged.
