The Board of Police Commissioners voted last week to suspend Lt. Wayne Williams for 15 days and place him on departmental probation for one year for an incident that occurred seven years ago.
The board held an executive session July 1 to discuss a “personnel matter,” and made the vote without any discussion about the incident in question.
Francis Teodosio, the city’s labor attorney who represented the Board of Police Commissioners, said the discussion was prompted by a complaint that came before the board about three months ago.
Teodosio did not elaborate on the complaint or the incident, which occurred while Williams was off-duty in the summer of 2002.
The Valley Independent Sentinel has sent a Freedom of Information request to the police department for a copy of the internal affairs investigation performed in response to the complaint.
Williams was unavailable for comment.
Chief Kevin Hale directed all comments through Teodosio. Police commissioners were also unable to be reached for comment.
According to minutes from the meeting, Williams was suspended for conduct unbecoming an officer and violation of the oath of office code of ethics.
Williams is a veteran police officer and serves as the department’s public information officer, making him the public face of the department by acting as spokesman for press inquiries.
