Police have arrested a man they say was stealing GPS units out of cars in downtown Ansonia.
LeQuincy “Quincy” Smith, 24, was arrested for three incidents where police said he stole GPS units from cars parked in a municipal lot on East Main Street.
Police said Smith, who listed his address on Hull Street in Ansonia, was breaking the windows of cars and taking out the GPS units.
Smith was charged with two counts of sixth-degree larceny, one count of fifth-degree larceny and three counts of criminal mischief.
He is also facing similar charges in New Haven.
Police there said he confessed to 80 break-ins in the Sargent Drive and Long Wharf area, the New Haven Register reported last week.
Ansonia police started to suspect Smith after receiving a description of his car, Lt. Andrew Cota said.
Police stopped him recently and found a stolen GPS unit in his car. He later confessed to six incidents where he took GPS units from cars, Cota said.
The warrants for three of those incidents were served Friday after police saw Smith’s car and pulled him over, Cota said.
Police have more warrants pending to charge Smith with the other thefts, Cota said.
