If it’s good enough for rich folks living along golf courses on the shoreline, it’s good enough for him.
That was part of the reasoning behind Carl D’Alessio’s request to operate a golf cart on city streets.
D’Alessio made the request during last Thursday’s meeting of the city’s Board of Police Commissioners.
D’Alessio said he too lives near a shoreline — not the Long Island Sound, but Quillian Reservoir.
D’Alessio sent the Board a letter dated Aug. 13 requesting a permit to drive his golf cart.
After D’Alession left the meeting, the Commissioners said they were worried about potential liability issues concerning golf carts, such as what would happen if a golf cart struck a pedestrian.
The obvious issue of a golf cart’s size and speed was also a concern.
Commissioner Dennis Phipps said that the issue needs more research. Police Chief Kevin Hale agreed to designate someone to complete the research.
D’Alessio told Valley Indy that he has been driving a golf cart since 1998. He said his cart has headlights, brake lights, a signal light, a horn and mirrors.
He said he didn’t agree with the Board stating that the law was intended for the beach.
“I don’t care about the beach,” D’Alessio said. “If the legislature does something, then they do it for the State of Connecticut.”
