Ansonia Police Make Arrest In School Bomb Threats

Ansonia PD PHOTOAnsonia police arrested a 47-year-old man Wednesday in connection to bomb threats made at two elementary schools last month.

Robert Drewelus, of Hartford, was charged with two counts of first-degree threatening, two counts of first-degree falsely reporting an incident, and risk of injury to a minor.

He was released on a $5,000 bond, and is due at Superior Court in Derby on Feb. 28, according to a press release issued by the Ansonia Police Department.

Police said Drewelus, a former Ansonia resident, turned himself in after hearing the department had a warrant for his arrest. Police said they zeroed in on Drewelus through an investigation into cell phone records.

On Jan. 6, Mead and Prendergast schools were evacuated after two separate bomb threats were phoned in.

The first threat was called into the office at Mead School about 12:15 p.m. Police removed about 600 students from Mead School and escorted them to Prendergast while they investigated the school.

Shortly after the students arrived at Prendergast, about 1:15 p.m., another bomb threat was called into the office at that school, Police Chief Kevin Hale said at the time.

The Prendergast students were removed from the school while police investigated.

Both threats were made by what appeared to be adult male voices, Hale said at the time.
